Los gladiadores convierten Alcalá de Henares en un coliseo romano

Los gladiadores transform the city of Alcalá de Henares into a coliseum in the new exhibition at the Museo Arqueológico y Paleontológico de la Comunidad de Madrid, which will be on display at this cultural space until September 28th.

The regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, inaugurated the exhibition ‘Hispano! Gladiators in the Roman Empire’ on Thursday, which explores the historical phenomenon of gladiators, their origins, their relationship with power, the development of gladiatorial games, and the social role of the fighters.

«Centuries have passed, but this Roman legacy that we come from has been forever marked in Spain, in theaters, amphitheaters, mosaics, and art arches. As the illustrious Cicero said, we also look at the gladiators, not without some admiration, who, faced with death, strive more for life. In the Community of Madrid, we will learn the history as it was. That is our duty as an Administration, to respect it and do so truthfully and rigorously,» stated Ayuso.

Ave Caesar, those who are about to die… arrive at the Regional Archaeological Museum

During the visit, the Madrid president was able to see some of the most outstanding elements of this exhibition curated by the director of the National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida, Trinidad Nogales, and the director of the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the National Archaeological Museum, Ángeles Castellano. The installation showcases 170 pieces, including some original weapons and defenses from Pompeii, used by fighters in public spectacles, such as helmets, daggers, and greaves.

The inauguration event was also attended by the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Mariano de Paco; the General Secretary of the Madrid People’s Party, Alfonso Serrano, and the mayor of the city of Alcalá, Judith Piquet. «With this inauguration, everything points to our museum continuing to be at the forefront of promoting archaeology and science in general to our citizens. If Alcalá is a great cultural city in the region and in Spain, it is precisely because of the support always provided by the Government of the Community of Madrid,» highlighted the mayor of Alcalá.

The exhibition, with free admission, can be visited during the usual museum hours in the historic center of Alcalá de Henares from Tuesday to Saturday, from 11:00 to 19:00, and on Sundays and holidays, from 11:00 to 15:00. Additionally, MARPA offers guided tours at 12:00 and 13:15 on weekends and holidays. These visits can be reserved by calling 91 879 66 66.
