Alcalá de Henares, a city rich in history and culture, is home to one of its most precious treasures: the Teatro Salón Cervantes, inaugurated in 1888. This emblematic space has witnessed numerous transformations over the years, evolving from a gaming hall to a cinema and finally to a theater, although it has also faced periods of abandonment that nearly led it to oblivion.
Santiago, one of the custodians of the theater, proudly expresses the importance of this building for Alcalá: «It is a pride for this city to have this theater.» In 1925, the theater underwent a significant renovation with the construction of a second floor that includes boxes and an amphitheater, increasing its capacity and enhancing the experience for the audience.
The stage of the Salón Cervantes retains romantic elements that evoke its past, such as the manual pulleys still in use. «It wouldn’t hurt to optimize and renovate it with some motors,» admits Santiago, «but that’s also the charm of this theater.» This balance between the old and the modern is what makes the Salón Cervantes a unique place.
The secrets of the Teatro Español: a journey through history and avant-garde
The theater has eight well-equipped dressing rooms, as well as a washing and ironing area. Occasionally, an additional dressing room is set up on the lower floor to facilitate quick changes between acts.
Over the years, numerous prominent artists have graced its stage. «Núria Espert was here last season and just a week ago Toni Acosta,» shares Santiago. Great figures like Carmen Machi and Lolita have also performed, leaving their mark on this historic stage.
The technical booth of the theater is the heart of the show; everything is prepared there to ensure that each event is a success. There, Luis, in charge of the technical details, «works everything out» so that the show goes perfectly.
A journey to the unexplored secrets of the Teatro Pavón
Beyond the main stage, the Teatro Salón Cervantes has an outdoor patio that used to function as a summer cinema and event space. However, its use is limited to respect the tranquility of nearby residents. «It is not usually used to avoid noise and disturbances,» explains Santiago.
The Teatro Salón Cervantes is not just a building; it is a symbol of the cultural heritage of Alcalá de Henares. With its architectural beauty and rich history, it remains a place where the magic of art lives and breathes.
