The plenary hall of the Municipal Council of Alcalá de Henares was the host of the central event of the Santa Águeda holidays this Sunday, an ancient Castilian tradition in which a woman receives the Bast of the Primary and holds a symbolic authority of the city.
In this case, Sara García Alonso was chosen to celebrate this honor, and it was the mayor of Alcalá, Judith Piquet, who handed over the baton.
The Brotherhood of Santa Águeda and the Castilian-Leon Center were the organizers of these holidays, which have been taking place in the city since 1993.
A Liturgy and a procession from Plaza de Los Santos Niones with the image of Santa Águeda preceded the Municipal Council, as stated by the Council.

Dressed in Traditional costumes and accompanied by Dulzainas music, all participants in the delegation from the Brotherhood and the regional house arrived at the plenary hall with the «Águuedas mayor» and with their steward, Pilla Gómez González, at the forefront.
García Alonso praised The importance of this tradition «Because, no matter how testimonial and festive it may be, it also serves to claim and value the leading role of women not only in family and neighborhood life, but also in public space.»
In this regard, The mayor expressed appreciation «For the efforts, sacrifices, courage, and generosity of the women who preceded us, because today it is possible, as part of the great social and political achievements of recent decades, that we are here taking the floor.»
Piquet also had words for the work of recovery and promotion of Popular traditions from this country carried out by the regional houses in Alcalá, taking the holidays of Águeda as an example.
